A FedEx McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft was involved in a “runway excursion” today at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The 29-year-old aircraft with registration number N583FE was operating as flight FX-5033 from Bangalore to Mumbai.

The incident occurred shortly after 12 pm on June 3, 2020, when FedEx MD-11 aircraft, operating as flight 5033, landed at runway 14/32 in Mumbai. The flight was arriving from Bangalore International Airport.

A FedEx MD-11 overshot the runway at Mumbai Airport.

The MD-11 could not stop on time and overshot the runway by about nine metre. As Mumbai Airport has witnessed multiple runway overruns in the past, the emergency personnel were quick to react, and the aircraft was towed away immediately.

Nobody was injured during the incident, and neither the aircraft nor airport infrastructure was damaged.

String winds and heavy rains have struck Mumbai since early hours of the day. While most of the commercial flights were cancelled, some cargo operations could operate before conditions deteriorated any further.

During heavy winds and rains, aircraft braking may prove less effective than usual due to wet conditions, which might be a contributing factor in this incident.
